Going their seperate ways

April 24, 2024

Or walking away as friends:

This lively oil sketch illustrates the Old Testament story of Jacob making peace with his twin brother Esau, many years after he had robbed Esau of his birthright.

The struggles of Jacob and Esau began in the womb which brought their relationship to the brink of violence. Upon a night Jacob wrestles with an adversary and resolves to end this conflict. The next day after being seperated for 22 years, the brothers meet and instead of fighting, they embrace and part as friends.

If we can wrestle with ourselves, we need not fight as enemies. Conflict, internalized, can be resolved.Rabbi Johnathan Sacks
