Dolly is back…

December 21, 2021

Isn’t this so romantic? The Ceres Rail Company’s steam train has laid dormant since March 2020.

Dolly resumed her travels between Cape Town and Elgin on 28 November, after being halted since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The trip takes about four hours,

with the train winding its way up Sir Lowry’s Pass before descending into

Grabouw and the valley below best known for its green tapestry of apple and pear orchards.

The train departs from Harbour Bridge Hotel on Dockrail Road at the Foreshore in Cape Town at 07:45 and arrives at the Elgin Railway Market at 11:30. The trains begins its return journey to Cape Town at 14:15 and arrives back between 17:30 and 18:15.

Dolly is back. Steam train Dolly has a fully licensed bar on board and serves a variety of snacks and refreshments.

I’m pretty proud of Cape Town for getting Dolly to operate again after being docked for 20 months. Hopefully all railway lines in the City will follow suite.

So, next time we meet let’s hook up at Dockrail Road 😊 on the Foreshore, hop on Dolly for a joy ride through the deciduous farming valley with grapes, apples, pears, peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots and avocados in abundance.

Hello Dolly. She’s a beautiful steam locomotive. I don’t remember if I mentioned to you that we have the largest steam locomotive facility in the USA in Albuquerque called The Rail Yards. It’s been unused for trains since the 1960s after the electric-diesel locomotives replaced the steam locomotives. My neighbor started working as an apprentice machinist repairing steam locomotives in 1958 at the Rail Yards.

    • Oh i love that song by Satchmo, he always steals my heart.

      Hello Timothy,
Yes she is absolutely gorgeous. A sweet darling in that region.
Welcome on board. I doubt i would’ve forgotten if you shared such an interesting locomotive detail with me. I must travel through cyber and visit Albuquerque. What a unique name. Hey look what innovation can do. Steam locomotives must find other passes to keep themselves in business. Trains and their history are absolutely fascinating. 1960 feels so long ago, and yes it is, before that was the romantic era of trains like Dolly.
You friend must be quite an age by now and I’m sure he has lots of stories to tell about his fascinating skills. So many skills in my country are being held ransom because we just cant get our act together to fix the railways. Jobs and business would be booming.

He’s 82 now. He’s doing well. He has lots of train tales to tell. It’s fun talking to him. Albuquerque is named after the Duke of Alburquerque in Spain. There is a sister city in Extremadua, Spain which we visited when we lived in Spain. Albuquerque is a Moorish name from what I understand.

      • Oh 82 is such a grand age. Lovely to know that he is doing well. I can well imagine the feeling of being in his company

I will definitely visit those places in Spain and the Duke as well. Thanks for sharing with me.

  3. How lovely this is; where I live there is an old train that they refurbished and use for events and during holidays. It’s a joy to ride. Like going back in time. Wonderful post, dearest Abi. ❤️❤️
