Tactile Texture

September 12, 2021

This refers to how the art surface physically feels.  Rough, smooth, bumpy, scratchy etc. Painters, for example, will often add things to their artwork to give the surface a texture. Some may add gesso or impasto to create lumpy, rough textures right on their canvas.Tactile texture also refers to 3D artwork, where the surface of a clay sculpture can be scratched, poked, or pressed to give the actual surface a texture rich quality.

Ester Orloff: “Creating Bliss” Oil on Canvas.

When the grass is soft as the breasts of doves

And shivering sweet to the touch ?

– Francis Cornford
