It’s an untenable situation

December 22, 2020

Beitbridge is a border town in the province of Matabeleland South, Zimbabwe. The name also refers to the border post and bridge spanning the River Limpopo, which forms the political border between South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Currently, as I write, there is a 15km traffic congestion at the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe. Immigrants have reported that some of them have been waiting for 2 days to cross the border to make their way home. If these long hours of waiting doesn’t rub salt in the wounds of the rapid rise of Covid 19 isn’t enough to drain the patience of road travellers at this time of the year, then it is the further dehumanising of people through bribes that they have to pay to border officials to hasten their crossing to reach their loved ones before Christmas. It is a sorrowful situation to face this negative behavioural epidemic that remains a constant in Africa. People become ill, through the anxiety that eats them up. But do these border officials who behave as if covid 19 doesn’t exist care at all? No! they don’t, not one bit. They want their pound of flesh off the backs of fragile working people to supplement their incomes, come what may.

One day in the by and by we will get it right, managing crisis and being disaster management compliant.
